The last quarterfinal encounter of the Asian tournament witnessed Iran’s squad overcoming Chinese rivals 62-59 in Tehran’s Azadi Sports Complex.
National Iranian junior basketball team secured a 23-19 in the first quarter of the tough Friday match though they conceded a close 10-11 defeat in the second.
The third quarter concluded in Iran’s favor 15-5 and despite losing the final quarter 14-21, the Iranian outfit chalked up a 62-59 win overall by offering excellent sportive performance.
Accordingly, Iran found its way to the semifinal round of the sportive event as the fourth team while they had suffered two losses against Japan and South Korea and bagged two wins over Kazakhstan and Lebanon in the preliminary round.
China, however, had finished the group stage undefeated before losing to the Iranian side on Friday.
In other quarterfinal fixtures, Lebanon, Japan and South Korea managed to pull out victories against India, Chinese Taipei and South Korea, respectively.
Iranian basketballers will return to action today by taking up South Korea in an attempt to secure a place in the final round.
The 2016 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship, which marks the 24th edition of the continental sports event, opened in the Iranian capital on July 22 and will wrap up on July 31.
